BRUSSELS — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was ready to work with MEPs from Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party after June’s European elections, arguing that this was necessary to keep the bloc on the pro-European path.

“She is clearly pro-European, against Putin, she has been very clear on this, and pro-rule of law, if that continues, and then we propose to work together,” said von der Leyen, who is campaigning for five more elections. one-year term as head of the European Commission, Meloni said during an election debate organized by the European Broadcasting Union in the European Parliament on Thursday.

Von der Leyen and his center-right European People’s Party have already hinted at the prospect of cooperating with Meloni’s EU lawmakers, following elections in which the current parliamentary majority of the EPP, socialists and liberals is expected to become more thin.
