Jobs for thousands of deliveries of letters and packages to the American postal service and the UPS could be reduced this year, both seeking to reduce costs and rationalize operations such as the effects of President Trump’s prices and digital innovation are hiding in the economy.
But what it means for people with a package to ship or look forward to an invoice or an important letter may depend on where they live.
Here is what we know so far:
How many jobs are cut?
Last week, the director general of the United Parcel Service announced that the company would cut 20,000 jobs this year, or around 4% of its global workforce and plans to close 73 distribution facilities by the end of June.
“We are executing the largest reconfiguration of the network in the history of the UPS,” the company said in a press release. “This strategic initiative will optimize the ability of our network to line up on the expected volume levels and improve productivity through additional automation.”
The closures are part of a long -term plan to modernize the operations of its distribution centers, including the addition of automation, entirely or in part, to 400 of its installations, according to CNN. Earlier this year, UPS announced that it had concluded an agreement with Amazon, its largest customer, to reduce operations related to companies by more than 50% by the second half of 2026.
“In addition, the actions we take to reconfigure our network and reduce costs in our company could not be more timid,” said UPS Director Carol Tomésaid during a recent call conference. “The macro environment can be uncertain, but with our actions, we will emerge as an even stronger and more agile UPS.”
For its part, the Teamsters union which represents thousands of UPS workers said that it would fight against any cup that would harm its members.
“The United Parcel Service is contractually forced to create 30,000 Teammsters jobs under our current national master agreement,” said Sean Mr. O’Brien, president of Teamsters General, in a press release.
“If UPS wants to continue to reduce business management, teamsters would not be on its way,” he said. “But if the company intends to violate our contract or try to pursue jobs of teams that argue hard and well remunerated, UPS will be in a hell of a fight.”
In March, the master-general of the time, Louis Dejoy, announced that the American postal service would reduce 10,000 positions as well as the reduction of the postal service budget with the help of the so-called Ministry of Government efficiency of Elon Musk, according to a letter sent to the members of the Congress. The Musk group is not a government agency.
This decision comes as the postal service has suffered nearly $ 100 billion in losses and is expected to lose an additional $ 200 billion, said Dejoy in his letter.
USPS employs 533,724 people in 2024.
The postal service has worked to modernize its operational efficiency, its reliability of service and financial stability with its delivery plan for America, introduced in 2021.
The 10 -year plan was updated last year to review the initial objectives, highlight the changes and set up plans for future initiatives. In the updated report, the postal service said that the number of letters collected via its post offices and by carriers on their routes has decreased sharply in the last decade.
The number of letters collected and postcards increased from 57 billion parts in 1997 to only 12 billion parts in 2023, a reduction of 80%.
From now on, the postal service reconfigures its processes of collection and transport to approach this drop. The mail is currently transported to and from processing facilities and post offices twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. These deliveries will be reduced in a single daily trip in the morning, according to the report.
“This will optimize our regional transport, will reduce unnecessary roads and accelerate treatment,” says the report.
How will this affect the estimated delivery time?
Despite the reduction of 20,000 jobs and the automation of work in 400 facilities, UPS claims that the modifications made to its operations will not have an impact on customer experience.
But for the American postal service, some changes should be expected.
These changes will be implemented in two phases, the first phase started on April 1 and the second will start on July 1.
The delivery times for first -class mail, which includes letters and postcards, will remain between one and five days.
The delivery time of Priority Mail Express, a service that allows customers to send packages up to 70 pounds to any condition, will now take between one and three days. Previously, it was between one and two days depending on the end of the day when the article was deposited.
The delivery of end -to -end marketing mail, which most people call spam, as well as magazines and newspapers, will be delivered more quickly, but the USPS has not provided details.
“As for mail, most competitive shipping products will keep the same service standard, some packages will have a faster standard and some will have a slightly slower standard,” said the report.
You can find out more about the duration of what you can expect when a package arrives at your destination by visiting your local post office or by checking the online “service commitments” tool. The tool requests the exact postal code where the package will be sent and sent by post, on what date and what time; It generates the average delivery time expected according to this information.
