UPDATE: McLaren fails in qualifying claim over Piastri removal

McLaren have failed in their bid to challenge the qualifying result at the Austrian Grand Prix after Oscar Piastri’s lap time was deleted for exceeding track limits.

Piastri set the third fastest time at the end of Q3, but his final attempt was disallowed for exceeding track limits at Turn 6. The corner in question has an exit kerb followed by a large gravel trap, and footage appears to show Piastri marginally crossed the white line with all four wheels without touching enough gravel to lose lap time.

After being demoted to seventh on the grid, the Australian described the situation as “embarrassing” given the proximity of the gravel and the fact that it would penalize any driver who went wider than the exit curb , but the FIA still deletes lap times even if the cars enter the track. gravel because they left the track.

The McLaren team principal visited the stewards immediately after the end of the qualifying session to discuss the issue, and the team subsequently lodged an official protest against the results at the Red Bull Ring.

The stewards later ruled the protest inadmissible, as a decision of the stewards is not subject to challenge, and McLaren did not specify any relevant regulations or against whom the protest was made, and addressed it to the bad administrator.

The qualifying result stands, with Piastri starting from seventh place on Sunday.
