“We need nuclear power, we need wind, we need solar energy, we need batteries … We need hydrogen, we need carbon capture. And nuclear has a special role to play in finding clean, stable and reliable power,” he said.
“Obvious” sites
The three sites belong to the French company EDF, a company in which the French State is the only shareholder, delivered in an agreement concluded in 2023.
An EDF spokesperson refused to comment on any discussion, but said: “EDF would host developments that allow job possibilities on our sites, once the stations are closed.
“Our sites have many advantages, including a skilled workforce, network connections and support communities that are used for nuclear energy and economic benefits that existing stations provide.”
The United Kingdom has not built a new nuclear power plant since Sizewell B was opened in 1995. The highly held Hinkley Point C may not be completed before 2031, and the government still weighed a final investment decision for the sister plant Sizelwell C.
Meanwhile, the great British nuclear nuclear (GBN), the body of arms length implemented under the last conservative government, oversees the final stages of the competition at the end of the race to build mini-nukes in the United Kingdom, known as small modular reactors (SMR).
