United Flight ‘Severe Turbulence,’ 7 People on Newark Plane Taken to Hospital

Seven people were taken to the hospital after a United Airlines flight to Newark experienced “severe turbulence” Friday, officials said.

The flight, which was scheduled to arrive from Tel Aviv, was forced to land at New York’s Stewart International Airport (SWF) after what the Federal Aviation Administration called a “medical emergency for passengers,” CNN reported .

In a statement, United said high winds were reported around Newark, according to the report.

New Windsor Emergency Medical Service Chief Michael Bigg said, “Upon arrival, our first EMS unit on scene was encountered by a flight crew who reported experiencing severe turbulence during the landing in Newark and being diverted to New York International Airport. They informed our crew that “there were several people on the plane complaining of nausea and chest pain due to the turbulence,” according to CNN.

Bigg said about 319 people were on board the flight.

“We assessed about 30 people and transported seven to the local hospital just for observation, with no serious injuries or conditions,” he added. “Most people just wanted to get checked out at the local emergency room.”

Data from flight tracker Flightradar24 shows the plane flew over Newark Airport before turning back and landing at SWF.

The plane then refueled before continuing its journey to Newark Liberty International Airport, United said, NBC News reported.

United only resumed flights between Tel Aviv and Newark in March, after suspending them in October following the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The airline said it made the decision after carrying out a “detailed safety analysis” and would “continue to monitor the situation in Tel Aviv and adjust the schedule if necessary.”

Business Insider has contacted United Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for comment.

A United flight from San Francisco to Paris was also diverted Thursday evening after the crew reported a problem with one of the engines.

Flight data shows the plane was about to cross the Canadian border when it turned around and landed in Denver.

The FAA said the plane landed safely “after the crew reported a possible mechanical problem,” CBS News reported.

Airlines have come under increased scrutiny of late since a panel blew up an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 shortly after takeoff.

United CEO Scott Kirby said earlier this month that the airline would review recent safety incidents involving its fleet to update its safety procedures and training.

“Safety is our top priority and is at the center of everything we do,” Kirby said.
