Union Minister Rajnath Singh eyes third consecutive term

In the upcoming elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) fielded Lucknow central MP Ravidas Mehrotra against Singh, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nominated Sarwar Malik.

The Congress party won the Lucknow seat six times, while the BJP secured eight victories. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit, the sister of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was the first MP to occupy this prestigious seat. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also a five-time MP from Lucknow.

The Lucknow Lok Sabha seat comprises five Assembly constituencies: Lucknow East, Lucknow West, Lucknow Central, Lucknow North and Cantt Assembly seats.

Voting date

The Lucknow Lok Sabha seat is expected to vote in the fifth phase on May 20. Votes will be counted on June 4.

2019 results

In the 2019 elections, BJP’s Rajnath Singh defeated SP candidate Poonam Sinha, the wife of Shatrughan Sinha, by a margin of nearly 3.5 lakh votes. The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 54.78% in 2019.

Rajnath Singh also won the 2014 elections, defeating Rita Bahuguna Joshi of the Congress.
