Unexpected innovation for electric vehicles could completely change electric vehicle batteries

An unexpected new electric vehicle innovation could soon completely revolutionize the way we create the batteries used in electric vehicles. The discovery was completely accidental, but it could make it possible to create capacitors with an energy density 19 times higher than current options.

This advance comes in the form of a new material structure that could allow capacitors in vehicles or electrical devices to store energy even longer. While batteries can already hold a charge for a long time, the capacitors that can charge them are more limited.

However, this unexpected new electric vehicle innovation may soon change. The new “heterostructures” make it possible to reduce the speed of energy dissipation, scientists explain in a study detailing their results. This study is published in the journal Science.

To understand the importance of this advancement, we need to understand how capacitors work. Essentially, they give devices, or electric vehicles, a way to get a burst of energy beyond the battery. This is useful in situations such as taking a photo using a smartphone’s flash.

These capacitors are most often made of naturally polarized materials. And then when you add voltage, the bias is reversed. This remains in the capacitor even when the power is turned off, allowing the capacitor to use this burst of energy later. However, it loses power over time. This is where the unexpected innovation of electric vehicles comes into play.

Indeed, thanks to this new approach, the capacitors do not lose power as quickly. This makes them more useful in the long term and allows power to be delivered more often without the need to reapply voltage to reverse the polarization of the capacitors. This is an intriguing finding that, once scaled up, could be a complete game-changer for electric vehicles, in the same way that faster battery charging will shake things up.

Of course, we’ll have to wait first to see if this can be expanded.
