UN experts say North Korean missile landed in Kharkiv

STORY: Missile debris that landed in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on January 2 came from a North Korean ballistic missile.

This is according to a report by United Nations sanctions observers submitted to a Security Council committee and consulted by Reuters on Monday April 29.

These images date from the days following the January strike.

At the time, the local prosecutor’s office showed the media fragments of the missile, suggesting they could have come from a missile supplied by North Korea.

In the report, observers concluded that the debris came from a Hwasong-11 series missile and constituted a violation of the arms embargo on North Korea.

which has been the subject of UN sanctions since 2006 due to its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

In their report, the observers say they (quote) “could not independently identify where the missile was launched from, or by whom.”

Information on the missile’s trajectory – provided by Ukraine – suggests the missile was launched from Russia, the report said.

The Russian and North Korean missions to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The United States and others have already accused North Korea of transferring weapons to Russia for use against Ukraine, which it invaded more than two years ago.

Both have denied the accusations.

Last year, they pledged to deepen their military ties.
