Kyiv – Spanish police investigate the death of Andriivo Portnov, 51, a powerful former Ukrainian politician, who lived in Spain.
Portnov was shot dead by several unknown attackers in a street in Pozuelo in Alarcón, a city in the province of Madrid in Spain, the Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed in Politico.
“Official sources confirm that the victim has been shot down several times while riding in a vehicle. Several people pulled him in the back and head, then fled the premises in a wooded area,” said the ministry’s press service.
Portnov was one of the main officials of the former pro-Russian fugitive president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych. In 2021, it was sanctioned by the United States for allegations of large-scale corruption, in particular in the judiciary.
The murder of Portnov is not the first high -level shoot in Spain linked to Ukraine. Maxim Kuzminov, a Russian soldier who attracted applause for defection in kyiv after the invasion of Russia, was shot in Villajoyosa, near Alicante, in 2024.
