Ukraine bombs radioactive waste storage – official – RT Russia and the former Soviet Union
Ukrainian troops bombed Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in the past two days, said Renat Karchaa, an adviser to Russian nuclear operator Rosenergoatom.
Karchaa said the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was targeted on Sunday morning following a barrage fired at the facility the day before, when six projectiles hit the cooling system of one of the rectors and two hit storage of radioactive waste. He added that the employees were safe and sound.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the factory was bombed twice on Sunday, while 11 “large caliber artillery shells” were fired on Saturday. The ministry said projectiles fell near the reactors and the fire was also directed at power lines.
“It is impossible to assess the consequences of the bombardments because there is a danger of new attacks”, said Karchaa. The plant had not been so targeted since late September. according to the official.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose team is monitoring the situation on the ground, said that “more than a dozen explosions were heard in a short time” on Sunday. He added that experts could see some of the explosions from their windows.

Russian soldiers seized the plant shortly after Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine in late February. The Zaporozhye region, along with three other former Ukrainian territories, finally joined Russia after holding referendums on the issue in September.
