December 27, 2023 (KAMPALA) – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Sudanese General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, better known as Hemetti, met at Museveni’s country home in Rwakitura to discuss strategies to end to the long-standing conflict in Sudan.
In a statement issued from Kampala, Hemetti revealed his meeting with President Museveni, saying they discussed recent developments in Sudan and the resulting suffering of the Sudanese people.
Hemetti, who arrived in Uganda on Tuesday, also said he had presented his vision to negotiate, stop the war and build a new Sudan.
He underlined his attachment to the results of the extraordinary meeting of IGAD heads of state and government held in Djibouti on December 9, 2023.
Sources close to the meeting said Hemetti requested that IGAD leaders participate in the direct meeting. Initially, the meeting was supposed to bring together only the president of Djibouti and the president of IGAD.
He stressed that he would continue to implement his commitments in order to end the war, alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and restore security and stability to the country.
For his part, President Museveni published a short message on X confirming his meeting with Hemetti.
“During our meeting, he briefed me on the current situation in Sudan,” he added.
The planned face-to-face meeting, which was to take place in Djibouti on December 28, was postponed until January, but the exact date has not been revealed.
