A student from the UCLA is in the care of customs and the protection of American borders on Friday, and demonstrators gathered on the campus demanding the release of the student.
The international graduate student of the UCLA was detained while he was trying to cross the American-Mexican border, according to university reports.
The demonstrators gathered on the campus on Thursday demanding the release of the student and drawing attention to detention.
In a statement published Thursday, the UCLA vice-chancellor for strategic communications, Mary Osaka, said: “The student remains under the cbp care, and we are actively working to find out more about information.”
“Our international students are an essential element of our community of Bruin, and we remain fully determined to support their ability to learn and prosper at the UCLA.”
The student’s name has not been released and we do not know why the student is held.
Earlier this month, the Chancellor of the UCLA, Julio Frenk, said that six current students and six former students participating in a training program saw their visa revoked by the US government.
“In recent days, a certain number of international students on the status of F-1 in universities across the country have seen their visa revoked and the status of the information system on visitors to students and students have ended the federal government.
“As Chancellor, I will always try to keep you informed about important situations.
“The dismissal opinions indicate that all layoffs were due to violations of the terms of the visa programs of individuals. For the moment, the UCLA is not aware of any federal activity of application of the law on campus linked to these layoffs,” said Frenk.
“We recognize that these actions can provide enormous feelings of uncertainty and anxiety to our community. We want our students, the staff and teachers of the international and international UCLA only know that we support your ability to work, learn, teach and prosper here.
“I continue to meet almost daily the president of the UC Michael Drake and my chancellor colleagues in the UC system to prepare – and respond to – any change in federal policy. I am also in constant contact with senior leaders on campus. We remain determined to support our students while we respect the law.
President Donald Trump published a decree in January which threatened to revoke the visas of students who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations last spring in the middle of the current war between Israel and Hamas. The UCLA was the site of some of these events.
