Tyson Fury is expected to return to action soon as he prepares to face Oleksandr Usyk.
The ‘Gypsy King’ looked set to touch gloves with Usyk in February, but the fight was delayed as Fury suffered a horror cut above the eye after receiving an elbow during sparring.
The event is now scheduled to take place on May 18 and fans will be hoping that the British champion will not be hampered in any way by the injury, given the scale of the event.
Fury has been taking part in a full training camp at his gym in Morecambe, and his cutman Jorge Capetillo believes he needs to take extra precautions to ensure he does not reopen.
He told Betway: “The fight will take place in May, so he should be back sparring in two or three weeks.
“There’s always a chance he opens up again, but Tyson has to do what he’s good at with his distance, his reach, not trying to knock him out with one punch.”
“For a recovery it should take around 90 days, but it’s been 60 days or more since the cut so I’m sure with the right treatment he should be ready by May 18.
“Soon he can start with some light sparring, nothing difficult except getting the right reach and distance. That’s more important than the power punches with the range and timing.
“Tyson needs to treat the cut well before the fight and do some sparring sessions with a nice helmet.
“He needs to start with nothing crazy to make sure he doesn’t get hit hard and it doesn’t reopen.
“But I’m going to emphasize this, he needs his reach and his timing right and if they’re on top, it’s game over for Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson will be in the lead.”
Fury failed to impress in his last outing against Francis Ngannou, but after taking more time to prepare, he hopes he can make history in Saudi Arabia.
It’s clear he’s already working extremely hard, considering he’s displayed an impressive transformation in recent weeks.
The 35-year-old also impressed on the pads in training footage with his father John, potentially worrying signs for Usyk.
If the undefeated Briton wins the fight, he will become the first fighter to reign as undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.
An immediate rematch should await him, but Fury hopes to finally settle his all-British rivalry with Anthony Joshua once the saga is over.
