Two students from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville died after a “targeted and isolated event” on campus on Monday, officials announced.
The two 22 -year -old students, Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms, were the only people involved in the incident of a residence on campus, the university said.
UW-Platteville police department, Joe Hallman, said that a call to 911 came briefly before 4 p.m. Monday about a situation at the Wilgus Hall.
“It was determined very soon that it was not an active and continuous threat,” said Hallman during a press briefing on Monday evening. “The emergency staff responded immediately.”
Campus was advised to shelter in place, said Hallman, adding that the security protocol was activated. The order of the refuge in place was lifted just after 5 p.m.
Hallman said the incident is an “active current” investigation and had provided no details on what happened. UW-Platteville officials also provided any information on Monday’s incident.
“This is an evolving situation,” said university spokesperson Christine Bellport. “We provide for a joint declaration by the university police and the department’s criminal investigation (DCI) with details of investigation.”
The second year student Eric Sperduto, who lives at Wilgus Hall, told the subsidiary of NBC News WMTV in Madison, WISC., That he had seen two girls running from the building after 4 p.m. on Monday. He also saw the application of laws in the building.
“It is really sad and sad to think of families who are affected by this and the people who were their friends and things that I suppose that they are students like me who have changed now,” Sperduto told the point of sale.
In a press release, Chancellor Tammy Evetovich cried Martin, Beloit, Wisc., And Helms, from Baraboo, Wisc., Calling the “targeted and isolated” incident. The families of women have been informed, she said.
The University offers consulting services this week for community members, added Evetovich.
“The well-being of our pioneer community is my biggest concern,” she said. “Please take the time to take care of yourself and others.”
Uw-Platteville in the middle of the finale season. The final examinations were canceled for the rest of the week, said vice-chancer Laura K Reynolds, who also spoke at the press conference on Monday.
The university and its police service did not respond to additional comments on Tuesday.
