Two ‘underperforming’ Hudson Valley Stop & Shop stores set to close

Stop & Shop says its store on East Sanford Boulevard in Mount Vernon has not performed well and will close.

Customers tell News12 they are shocked.

“I’m surprised, I thought they were doing good business here,” said customer Pierre LaRoche.

“Why go there? It’s well stocked, they have good deals. And it’s convenient!” said customer Sharon Davis.

She shops at this store about twice a week.

“For a quick in, a quick out, I come here,” she said.

She says there is always a steady stream of people shopping: “Just after 5 p.m., when people are going home, there is a lot of shopping.”

“A lot of people from the Bronx come here to shop,” LaRoche added.

The store is one of seven in the state that must close by Nov. 2, and one of two in the Hudson Valley. The other store is in West Haverstraw, on Samsondale Plaza.

Stop & Shop is citing underperformance, but that may just be a sign of the times.

“There are stores that I used to frequent that have closed either because they were no longer in demand or because there was no longer access, mainly online,” Davis said.

The store says employees at the affected locations will be offered other opportunities within the company.

In a statement, the city of Mount Vernon said it is “actively engaging with potential partners and exploring opportunities to bring a vibrant new business to this location.”

Stop & Shop says it will communicate specific store closure dates to local customers well in advance of any closures.

The other Hudson Valley store that will close is located at 7 Samsondale Plaza in West Haverstraw.
