TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Two teenagers were injured in a shooting in the Franklin Park Mall food court Tuesday evening, detectives at the scene said. Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz told 13 Action News it was an accident where a 15-year-old boy accidentally killed himself and a 15-year-old girl.
Kapszukiewicz said Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle gave him information about the accidental shooting and that the 15-year-old boy was taken into custody when officers found him hiding in a dumpster. garbage behind a neighboring business. The mayor added that the teens were hospitalized for their injuries, but their lives were not in danger.
The mayor said it was unclear at this time whether the teen would face charges in connection with the incident. He said there was no doubt the incident was frightening and traumatic for others who were at the mall at the time of the shooting, but there was no other cause for concern.
“The only thing that should cause fear is that the United States is the only place where there are more guns than people,” Kapszukiewicz said. He said an accident like this could happen anywhere.
A security representative at Franklin Park Mall said it was still locked just before 7 p.m. and the mall would not reopen Tuesday evening.
