Police: 2 suspects shot after officers responded to active shooting threat in Colerain Township. Kroger

The way with the latest news and this breaking news tonight. At least two people rushed to the hospital after a police-involved shooting at a KROGER store in Colerain Township. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR JOINING HERE AT 6:00 P.M. My name is MIKE DARDIS and good evening to you. I’M HERE PAOLELLO IT ALL STARTED AROUND 4:00 PM TODAY. This is happening at Kroger’s north gate, just off Springdale Road and Colerain Avenue, a very busy area. WE HAVE LIVE TEAM COVERAGE FOR YOU TONIGHT. WLWT NEWS FIVE, DAISY KERSHAW AND TODD – THERE ON THE STAGE. Let’s start tonight with Todd, who just spoke with even more witnesses. Hi Todd. Yeah, I’ve had a lot of conversations in the last hour. AN HOUR AND A HALF. SHERRY AND MIKE AND, YOU KNOW, YOU REFERRED TO THESE TWO PEOPLE. We can tell you that they have been identified as suspects. BOTH OF THEM WERE SHOT AND TAKEN TO AREA HOSPITALS. DO NOT KNOW THEIR CONDITIONS. I don’t know their names, nor do I know their motivations at this point. BUT WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT THIS VERY BUSY KROGER STORE HERE ON SPRINGDALE ROAD IN COLERAIN TOWNSHIP IN THE 3600 BLOCK IS EFFECTIVELY AND A KIND OF LOCKDOWN IN RESPECT TO THE INVESTIGATION THAT’S HAPPENING NOW. IT ALL STARTED AROUND 4:00 THIS AFTERNOON. REPORT OF SOME SORT OF ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION DEPLOYING NEAR ONE OF THE ENTRANCES. A WITNESS, A WOMAN WORKING INSIDE THE STORE. You’ll hear it in a second, she said it was more like the FIFTH THIRD SIDE. There is a bank in this busy Kroger store. And that’s where it all happened. ONE KIND INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE STORE. There was some sort of chase and officer-involved shooting. AND AGAIN, THE TWO PEOPLE, uh, hit by bullets, identified as suspects, taken to the hospital. That’s what we know tonight. NO INDICATION OF A MOTIVE, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THIS HAS CAUSED A HUGE AMOUNT OF ANXIETY, FEAR AND PANIC FOR PEOPLE WORKING IN THE KROGER STORE AND THOSE WHO ARE SHOPPING. LET’S HEAR WHAT ONE OF THESE WORKERS SAID FIRST. It looked like fireworks, but I see a lady backing her car and then I look to my right and I just see a man holding a gun, pointing a gun down, and then I just took off running , flying downward. And I still run. I head towards the bistro area. I hear more than ten gunshots, and counting. And then I ended up walking out the door and everyone ran away. YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THIS YOUNG WOMAN, MICAH LEWIS, FELT AND EXPERIENCED WHEN THE ORDEAL WAS OCCURRING. I spoke to several other people who were inside. A Gentleman’s Shopping said he just hit the ground and prayed the shooter wouldn’t come down the aisle he was in, and we’ve all shopped at Kroger stores in that area ever since. It’s such a big footprint that we can all imagine what it must have been like. And I’m going to conclude with that. You know, the heroism of the police officers who ran into danger entering that Kroger store, checking aisle by aisle, entering barricaded rooms where store employees were inside, you know, not knowing what that was happening. SO THIS UNFOLDED AN INCREDIBLY DRAMATIC FASHION, A TERRIBLY SCARY SITUATION. We know of two people, two suspects taken to the hospital so far, live tonight here in Colerain Township. TODD – WLWT NEWS FIVE. THANK YOU TODD. And we are working to get conditions for these suspects. So far nothing official has been confirmed for us. WLWT NEWS FIVE’S DAISY KERSHAW IS ALSO LIVE ON SCENE RIGHT NOW WITH OUR TEAM’S COVERAGE CONTINUES. DAISY, I know you’ve talked to a lot of people. WHAT DO YOU KNOW? Well, Mike Sheree, it’s true. As you said, we are still working to obtain information on the suspect’s condition. Like TODD said. As we’ve all said, this is an incredibly active, ever-changing situation, but I can tell you that everyone I’ve spoken to in this store says it was an absolutely terrifying situation. As you know, we say it here. It’s incredibly crowded. PEOPLE’S CARS STILL THERE IN THE PARKING. WHILE THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. WE JUST SEE CROWDS OF PEOPLE COMING OUT OF THE STORE, CHILDREN IN THEIR HAND. You know, some people, one of whom we spoke to, was not able to leave the store on his own, had to be carried out by another customer. It’s the kind of terrifying thing you never want to be involved with. We’re going to hear from someone now who saw this. All we heard was the rapid succession of gunshots. And so everyone started running and I tried to run and I fell in the doorway, and someone had to drag me out because I couldn’t run any further. So me and some other customers were behind our cars in the handicapped area. We just couldn’t believe it. In situations like that, you know, I heard so many people here, they were helping each other, helping each other get down and get to cover. STORE EMPLOYEES ARE HELPING PEOPLE WHO WERE HERE SHOPPING AND WHO DON’T ALSO KNOW THE STORE, MAKING EVERYONE GET SAFE. It’s the heroism we see, as Todd mentioned from the police here, from others involved and an absolutely terrifying situation. Again, both suspects were taken to the hospital and we will continue to update you as we do so.
