The police and the prosecutor then published a statement indicating that five people had been seriously injured and that five others were minor.
The driver, a 40-year-old German from the neighboring state of Rhineland-Palatine, was also injured in the incident and was treated at the hospital, said the interior minister of Baden-Würtemberg, Thomas Strobl, to the DPA news agency.
The driver fled the scene after the incident, but was captured by the police and arrested after a short manhunt. No information has been published to find out if the incident has been premeditated.
The German Minister of the Interior, Nancy FaeSer, canceled his plans for the Cologne Rose Monday parade and will visit Mannheim instead.
“Save lives, take care of the injured and the first investigation by Mannheim authorities are now our main priorities,” said Faeser spokesperson.
Another major German city, Munich, was the scene of a car attack in mid-February when an Afghan asylum seeker went to a union demonstration.
