Twitter relaunches subscription service with higher price for iPhone users – NBC Chicago

Twitter is trying again to launch its premium service, a month after a previous attempt failed.

The social media company said on Saturday it would allow users to purchase Twitter Blue subscriptions to get a blue tick and access special features starting Monday.

The blue tick was initially given to companies, celebrities, government entities and journalists verified by the platform. After Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, he launched a service giving blue checks to anyone willing to pay $8 a month. But it was inundated with accounts of imposters, including those impersonating Musk’s companies, Tesla and SpaceX, so Twitter suspended the service days after it launched.

The revived service will cost $8 per month for web users and $11 per month for iPhone users. Twitter says followers will see fewer ads, be able to post longer videos, and have their tweets highlighted better.

Previously, there were several steps to get a “verified” blue tick on Twitter, but the platform’s new program allows users to purchase one for $7.99 per month.
