Twitch’s TikTok-style discovery stream rolls out to all users

Twitch is officially rolling out its new TikTok-like discovery stream to all users this week, the company announced Tuesday. The new stream, which launches as a tab in the Twitch iOS and Android apps, allows viewers to scroll through small chunks of content to discover new streamers. The official launch follows Twitch’s previous testing of the stream which began in August 2023.

With this launch, Twitch now joins many other popular apps that have launched their own short-form video streams following the rise in popularity of TikTok, including Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Uber Eats and LinkedIn to name a few.

There are two tabs in the feed: a live feed and a clips feed. The “live” stream shows live streams from streamers users already follow and streamers Twitch thinks they might like. The “clips” stream features streamers’ highlights on Twitch, allowing viewers to experience streamers’ content even when they’re not live.

While people typically head to Twitch when they have enough time to watch a live stream, the new clips stream is designed for times when users only have a few minutes to spare.

To better customize what you see in the stream, you can click the thumbs up or thumbs down button on a livestream or clip to indicate what type of content you want to see more or less of.

The arrival of the new stream comes as Twitch streamers have long asked the company to introduce new features to help them reach new audiences. Since Twitch is not a fully algorithmic platform like TikTok, Twitch streamers haven’t had many ways to attract new viewers outside of promoting themselves on other platforms or teaming up. with other streamers. With this new discovery stream, small and medium streamers have the potential to reach new audiences.

Twitch says all livestreams and clips are automatically eligible to appear in the stream if they meet the platform’s content guidelines. Although streamers cannot directly upload content to the Discovery Stream, Twitch encourages them to create and feature clips of their content for a chance to be included in the stream.
