President Donald Trump’s new prices on Mexico, Canada and China are here.
25% prices on imports from Canada and Mexico came into force on Tuesday.
Trump initially announced prices in the two countries in early February, but he concluded an agreement with the leaders of Mexico and Canada to delay the prices of a month.
Also on Tuesday, Trump doubled the price on China goods from 10% to 20% in order to put pressure to strengthen drug policy, in particular surrounding the flow of fentanyl in the United States.
The president’s initial decree placing prices on the three countries said that the prices would remain in place “until the crisis is attenuated”, referring to the border and drug policy.
Beijing responded rapidly against Trump’s additional rates, announcing that China will impose additional tariffs from 10% to 15% on certain American imports from March 10.
They include 10% of prices on imports of soy, pork and beef, as well as prices of 15% on imports of chicken and cotton, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
American agricultural imports to China were also targeted by Beijing when Trump began the trade war during his first mandate.
Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Canada for Energy and Natural Resources, told CNBC in an interview on Monday that prices in Canada would increase the prices of cars and energy for American consumers.
“We will see an increase in gasoline prices as an energy function, an increase in prices for Canada’s hydroelectricity electricity, higher domestic heating prices associated with natural gas from Canada and higher automobile prices,” said Wilkinson.
Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that she would wait to see the magnitude of the new prices before announcing reprisals.
The United States imports a range of key goods from Canada, Mexico and China, including crude oil, automotive parts and electronics. Some companies, such as Walmart, have said that they would increase prices if prices come into force.
Trump wrote on Truth Social in February that the Americans will feel “a certain pain” with the prices, but “all that will be worth the price that must be paid”.
The White House did not immediately respond to the request for BI comments.
It is a story in development. Please check the updates.
