But Trump’s prices were not the problem for producers of Vietnamese fruit, who only sold 5% of their products in the United States, said Nguyen, the secretary general of the country’s fruit association (Vinafruit). Instead, it is a lack of cold chain infrastructure to get more fruit in China, the largest farmers’ market, before they go wrong.
Such an upgrade in the transport infrastructure would help accelerate time to obtain fresh fruit from Vietnam to Chinese shelves of supermarkets, said Nguyen.
“Our railways and roads are not well connected; our ports are under development,” said Nguyen this week in Asia.
“The railway projects offered open up many possibilities. If Vietnam can meet the quality standards of the Chinese market, we have the potential to dominate it,” he said, in particular the Durians.
