In A minecraft filmFive characters, including a big American played by Jack Black, fall through a disused Idaho mine in a fantastic country where mining, construction and manufacturing are fabulously easy. Simple and docile villagers remain on vegetables, and there is a little night crime problem. But you can throw a castle for yourself – without mentioning nunchucks in giant steel – in a few seconds. It’s great. (I completely owe these ideas to my 7 year old Campbell son.)
The only problem is that under this idyllic world is the Nether – a hideous totalitarian regime where mining is obviously much less fun. Unfortunately, there is no price barrier preventing the inhabitants of the Nether from invading the world and trying to plunge it into eternal darkness.
You may think it is an exaggerated to say that it is an allegory almost perfect for the second Trump administration. But support me. Because what you think is happening is not what is happening.
