The big day of the price of President Donald Trump is there – and it could have an impact on a range of products on which the Americans count.
For weeks, Trump said that April 2 would be the “liberation day” for America, during which he intended to impose new prices on a range of different countries.
“April 2 is the day of liberation in America !!! For decades, we were scammed and mistreated by each nation of the world, both friend and enemy,” wrote Trump in an article on Truth Social. “Now it’s time for good old states
Trump should organize an official event to announce his price plans on Wednesday afternoon, so it is clear what the president will reveal exactly. Trump also suggested that new prices on April 2 may not be as large as originally planned. Trump told journalists on March 23 that prices on cars, semiconductors and wood will be announced “below”, and although reciprocal rates are scheduled for April 2, he “could give a break from many countries”.
“I don’t change. But the word flexibility is an important word,” said Trump.
Here is what we know about the prices that Trump could have planned for April 2.
Prices on goods from Canada and Mexico
At the beginning of March, Trump paused until April 2 25% of the prices on the goods of Canada and Mexico which are covered by the American-mexico-Canadian trade agreement.
The USMCA covers a wide range of imports from Canada and Mexico, including agricultural products, clothes, fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Trump said prices on Mexican goods aim to suppress drug and borders.
Canada Minister of Finance, Dominic Leblanc, said in a position on X on March 6 that Canada would delay reprisal rates until April 2 “when we continue to work for the withdrawal of all prices”.
Reciprocal
The Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, told Fox Business on March 18 that Trump was planning to retaliate against countries that imposed prices on American products.
“On April 2, we will produce a list of other prices in other countries,” said Bessent, and the Trump administration will explain to these countries why he does not agree with their prices. If the countries retreat their prices, Bessent said: “We will not present the price wall.”
However, if they maintain current policy, “then we will install the price wall to protect our economy, protect our workers and protect our industries,” said Bessent.
It has not provided details other than saying: “For some countries, it could be weak enough, for some countries, it could be quite high.”
As Trump has already said, according to the way countries react, his administration may not promulgate the prices offered on April 2.
Agricultural products prices
Trump wrote on Truth Social on March 3 according to which the prices on “external” agricultural products will begin on April 2.
“To the big farmers in the United States: prepare to start making a lot of agricultural products for sale in the United States,” he said.
We do not know which products will be affected and if these prices are among the wider reciprocal prices of Trump.
Secondary rate on Venezuela goods
Trump said he would impose a “secondary price” on Venezuela oil and gas in a truth social post on March 24, saying Venezuela sent “criminals” to the United States.
“Any country that buys oil and / or gas in Venezuela will be forced to pay a 25% rate in the United States on any job they will do with our country. All the documentation will be signed and recorded, and the price will take place on April 2, 2025, the day of the Liberation in America,” he said.
Cars prices
Trump signed a decree on March 26, which would place a 25% rate on all cars and car parts imported in the United States. The order indicated that the price will come into force on or after April 3 and at the latest on May 3.
“This will continue to stimulate growth as you have not seen before,” said Trump in the oval office before signing the order. “We will effectively charge a 25%rate. But if you build your car in the United States, there is no price.”
The prescription said that cars and automotive parts are imported into the United States “into quantities of such quantities and in circumstances such as threatening to harm the national security of the United States”.
