Trump’s bad evidence on his alleged legal persecution

One of the biggest stories in our modern politics is Donald Trump’s ability to engage his base and his political party despite blatantly bad, false, and even ridiculous arguments.

The most prominent example, of course, is his claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Trump relied on false claims of hundreds of thousands of fraudulent votes, scores of dead voters, wild misinterpretations of the vote counting process, and more. Republicans have generally not echoed these specific claims — apparently because they could not or would not vouch for them — but they have largely toed Trump’s line that the election was suspect .
