Trump would reinstate longtime republican anti-abortion

Friday, President Trump restored a long-standing republican anti-abortion policy known as the “Mexico City”, which prohibits federal funding from going to any non-governmental organization abroad that performs or promotes abortions .

This decision took place after having tackled thousands of opponents of abortion at Washington on Friday to mark the 52nd anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision in ROE v. Wade, who created a national right to abortion and which the Court canceled in 2022.

Federal law already prohibits the use of taxpayers’ dollars to support abortion services abroad. But in 1984, President Ronald Reagan went further, blocking foreign aid to non -governmental organizations who discuss abortion within the framework of family planning services, or recommend the rights to abortion, even if these groups do not use US tax dollars to do so.

During the four decades that followed, politics had a history of Laensiwing. The Democratic presidents, including Joseph R. Biden Jr., revoked him and the Republicans restored him. It has been in force for 21 of the last 40 years.

The fact that Mr. Trump has restored the ban is no surprise. When he presented himself to the presidency in 2016, he took a strong anti-abortion position, winning the support of the Christian conservatives by promising to appoint judges to the Supreme Court who would cancel the ROE. During the two and a half years since Roe was canceled, abortion has become a more complicated question for the Republicans, and Mr. Trump did not make a centerpiece of his 2024 campaign.

But Mr. Trump must still take care of the right wing of his party, in particular because his choice for the Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has a confused record on abortion. During his visit with the senators at Capitol Hill last month, Mr. Kennedy promised Senator Josh Hawley, Missouri republican, that he would support the reintegration of politics as part of a large anti-abortion program.
