US President Donald Trump said US military and commercial ships should be allowed to travel freely through Panama and Suez channels, two strategic roads for world trade and military operations.
“These channels would not exist without the United States of America,” Trump wrote in an article on Truth Social on Saturday evening. “I asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take care immediately and commemorate this situation,” added Trump.
The Panama canal connects the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.
Both are essential for world trade, reducing shipping time and costs, while offering soldiers a quick way to move between the oceans, strengthening geopolitical influence.
The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, replied on X, without naming Trump, that the “transits and costs of all ships through our channel” are regulated by the authority of the Panama Canal (ACP), an autonomous steering body. “There is no agreement in the opposite,” said Mulino.
