The Trump administration violates an ordinance of the Federal Court by continuing to freeze the financing of federal programs, a judge of the Rhode Island discovered on Monday.
In a strongly written response, the American district judge John J. McConnell, Jr., who oversees a legal action brought by 22 states and the District of Columbia, ordered the administration to restore immediately and resume funding.
The order is the first major challenge to recent suggestions that if President Trump, vice-president JD Vance and Doge director Elon Musk, do not like what the judge orders, an option is to ignore him , said Michel Paradis, who teaches constitutional law Columbia Law School.
“It is a difficult language – the judge does not spoil,” said Paradis to Business Insider.
“This is a direct direct, and I think that well aware of the reprimand by the district court of President Trump and his allies contesting the authority of the courts in a very public and really aggressive manner,” he said.
McConnell’s ordinance comes in response to evidence of the applicant’s states showing that frost – which, according to him, caused “irreparable damage” and was “probably unconstitutional” – is being floured, wrote the judge.
“The accused must immediately restore frozen funding” while the court weighs state complaints and government’s arguments on behalf of the frost, the judge wrote.
The Trump administration did not immediately respond to a request for comments on the new court order or to the accusations of the judge that last week’s order was ignored.
