Judge Juan Merchan found that former President Trump violated the limited gag order in the case for the tenth time and held him in contempt.
“I find you in criminal contempt for the tenth time,” Merchan said, determining that Trump violated the silence order when he made remarks about the case’s jury on April 22 during a interview on Real America’s Voice, after the trial began.
Merchan said the $1,000 fines per violation “do not serve as a deterrent” and threatened to jail Trump in the future.
“Mr. Trump, the last thing I want to do is put you in jail, you are the former president of the United States, and maybe the next president as well,” Merchan said, addressing Trump directly .
“At the end of the day, I have a job to do,” Merchan said.
