A federal website which included information on vaccines, tests and the processing of COVID-19 has been transformed into a page supporting the theory that the pandemic is from a laboratory leak.
Covid.gov’s website shows a photo of President Donald Trump walking between the words “laboratory” and “flight” under a head of the White House. He mentions that Wuhan, in China, where the coronavirus began to spread, is home to a research laboratory with history of research on the virus with “inadequate biosecurity levels”.
The web page also accuses Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Infectious Allergies and Diseases, of pushing a “favorite story” that COVID-19 is from nature.
Covid’s origins have never been proven. Scientists do not know if the virus jumped from an animal, like many other viruses, or came from a laboratory accident. An American intelligence analysis published in 2023 said that there is not enough evidence to prove one or the other theory.
It is common that government websites get a makeover from one administration to another, but the last overhaul has been more extensive than usual. Public health data has been rubbed, in particular any information involving transgender people. The Pentagon has also deleted photos that would celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion.
The covid.gov site included information on how to order free covid tests and described how to stay up to date with your COVVI-19 vaccine, saying that it is “the best way to protect you, you and your loved ones”. He advised people to know how to get treatment immediately if they fall sick and added links to find out more about COVID.
About 325 Americans died from COVID on average in the past four weeks, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of April 5, less than a quarter of adults in the United States obtained a updated covid vaccine. Millions of people worldwide have had a long cocvid, with dozens of very variable symptoms, including fatigue and cerebral fog.
