President Trump spoke several times a future announcement, “one of the most important announcements that have been made in several years about a certain subject”, at a oval office meeting on Tuesday with Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada.
He never said what he could talk about, nor about this “very important” subject he refers to, only suggesting that he would be made before leaving for a trip to the Middle East next week. But even the moment of the big announcement wandered, Mr. Trump saying that “will be done Thursday or Friday or Monday”.
“We will have a very, very big announcement to make. As as large as possible. And I won’t tell you what,” said Trump, before adding “it’s really, really positive.”
The curious episode was a particularly pronounced example of Mr. Trump’s staging, which he exercised in his campaigns and his presidency to attract and hold the attention of the media without providing substantial news.
