- President Trump announced a new White House office to solve American shipbuilding problems.
- It seems to be a priority for his administration.
- But the problems of shipbuilding are deep and will not be resolved overnight.
President Donald Trump said he wanted to see the United States building a lot of ships very quickly. To get there, he takes the army’s shipbuilding problems, and this is not an easy solution.
During his speech to a joint session of the congress on Tuesday evening, the president announced his objective to “resuscitate the American naval construction industry”, including the commercial and military sectors. It starts with a new office in the White House focused on shipbuilding, he said.
“We used to do so many ships,” said the president. “We don’t do them much anymore, but we will return them very quickly, very soon. It will have a huge impact to further improve our national security.”
The details on the new initiative were few, although Trump said that there would be tax incentives aimed at stimulating national industry. The White House did not offer additional information when it is affected by Business Insider.
Trump’s announcement Tuesday shows the desire to solve the problems that have long tormented American shipbuilding. For the navy, the challenges have led to serious cost -effects and delays.

Industry needs revitalization, especially since China gets up as a naval construction power, but the problems affecting deeply. Officials of Washington, DC, the Army and the Defense Industry have long deplored the complexities to bring naval construction on the right track.
Trump’s national security advisor Mike Waltz described American shipbuilding as an “absolute disorder”. The keys to this evaluation are substantial delays and rise in power.
Last year, a navy review revealed that most of the main service programs, such as critical submarines and surface ships, were late and budget years.
“One of the things that prevented the nation from building more ships is the cost,” said Bryan McGrath, defendant and national security consultant and retired navy in BI. He said Trump prices will probably not help this situation.
But it’s more than money. The misfortunes of American shipbuilding date back decades in the hollow of the industrial base.
Legislators, civil servants, government duty of the government and experts all stressed the drop in shipbuilding after the Cold War, which has shrunk national industry for the construction of new ships and the maintenance of those current.

“If we threw a million dollars in the American navy department today, we could not build ships because we do not have the industrial base. We must solve this problem,” said Senator Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican And the president of the Senate armed services committee said last month.
Trump officials and leadership choices have talked about some of the industry’s long -standing problems. During his confirmation hearing, the president’s candidate for the secretary of the navy, John Phelan, said that shipbuilding was an absolute priority for Trump.
He proposed some suggestions to resolve naval construction problems, including ideas from the ships on ships, encouraging the private sector to invest in shipyards and attract qualified workers to the naval manufacturer by careers thanks to competitive remuneration.
The leaders of the naval construction industry noted the concerns of the workforce. Tom Moore, Vice-President Director of Government Relations for Hudson Ingalls Industries, said data last month showing the loss of experienced workers in the past 30 years. He said workers today can only have a fraction of the experience of their predecessors.
The former Navy leaders said there were lessons to learn from foreign shipyards, such as those in Japan and South Korea. In his speech, Trump said that he “bring this industry back to home” without developing on details.
A certain number of key questions remain on the new plan of the White House and the efforts of the Trump administration to repair the American shipbuilding. US Navy
Although efforts to revitalize American shipbuilding are generally welcomed, McGrath said that the thrust to strengthen both commercial and naval naval construction “relaxed credulity” because “trying to develop to do more than two when the workforce” will probably not work well.
He suggested focusing the effort on the reconstruction of the military naval construction industry.
An important factor in this discussion, however, can be the wider policies of the administration.
“In the end,” said McGrath, “building the navy that the nation needs will be a very expensive business.” If the vision of the changing world of the Trump administration changes what is necessary for the navy, “then all this speech of a greater navy is noise and waste,” he said.
The preparation of the navy to meet the challenges posed by China seems to be a priority and in accordance with the “peace by peace” agenda.
The Navy has a 30 -year -old shipbuilding plan which focuses on the growth of its combat force of 296 crew ships at 381 by 2045. The Congress Budget Budget Office estimates that it will cost the Navy around 40 billion dollars per year.
