Senior American and Russian officials met four hours on Tuesday before US President Donald Trump suggests that kyiv was responsible for the conflict.
US President Donald Trump pushed kyiv’s objections on Tuesday to be excluded from talks between the United States and Russia in Saudi Arabia aimed at ending the war in eastern Ukraine.
He also seemed to suggest that Ukraine was to blame for a war that only started after Russia invaded this country.
Addressing journalists from his Mar-A-Lago field, Trump said: “Today, I heard, well, we have not been invited. Well, you have been there for three years. I never started it.
Trump has shown little patience for Ukraine’s objections to be excluded from talks in Saudi Arabia. He said on several occasions that the leaders of Ukraine should never allow the conflict to start, which indicates that kyiv should have been willing to make concessions to Russia before Moscow was made by a total invasion from Ukraine in 2022.
These comments and Trump’s objective to repair links with Moscow can cost the Transatlantic Alliance of the United States and Europe and considerably damage Washington’s position with Ukraine as well as with other nations that count on the American leadership of NATO and elsewhere for their safety and their protection.
“A half -cooked negotiator could have settled years ago without the loss of many land, very few land, without the loss of lives,” said Trump, echoing his frequent assertion that he would have could prevent the Russian invasion.
Trump said he thought he was “good luck” to end the Russian war in Ukraine, but healed by suggestions that the United States and Russia had started negotiations for End the fighting that occurs without Ukraine playing a role.
No intention to exclude Europe
Neither the Ukrainian nor European nations were invited to Tuesday talks in Riyadh. However, US officials said there was no intention of excluding them from peace negotiations if they start seriously.
“No one is sidelined here,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “Obviously, there will be a commitment and a consultation with Ukraine, with our partners in Europe and others. But ultimately, the Russian part will be essential for this effort.”
Trump National Security Advisor Mike Waltz noted that Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after talking with Putin last week and that US vice-president JD Vance and Rubio met Zelenskyy in Germany Friday.
However, Zelenskyy was unhappy to be omitted from the meeting, postponing plans to visit Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to avoid any bond of his trip with American discussions in Russia on Tuesday.
It was before Trump’s comments suggesting that Kyiv was at fault for starting the fighting.
“All of this negotiation from the start seems to be very tilted in favor of Russia. And it is even a question of knowing if he must be qualified as negotiation or, in a certain sense, a series of American capitulations, “said Nigel Gould-Davies, principal researcher for Eurasia and Russia at the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London and a former British ambassador to Bélarus.
If the parties succeed in negotiating the end of the Ukrainian conflict, Rubio said that it could open “incredible opportunities” to associate with the Russians “on questions which, hopefully, will be good for the world and also improve our long -term relationships. ” He didn’t say what it would imply.
