President Donald Trump signed two decrees on the school funding on Wednesday which made promises he made on the campaign track, including on the choice of the school and the end of school funding that support what the White House calls “radical indoctrination”.
During the week and a half since he was in office, Trump has signed a burst of executive shares when he sought to redo the federal government and promulgate his “America First” program, with a particular target on so-called diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
Also on Wednesday, he signed an executive decree fighting against anti -Semitism.
The order on the choice of school – a problem that Trump has been pushing for eight years – could be a huge victory for conservative activists and politicians who have recommended for decades to facilitate families to spend taxpayers more easily private education.
The order involves several agencies in the effort to provide taxpayers’ funds to parents to pay private schools.
Among its directives, the Ministry of Education – which Trump has promised to close – is ordered to issue advice on the use of federal funding to support scholarship programs for primary school students. The Ministry of Defense is ordered to submit a plan to Trump directly on how the families of the military can use the DOD funds to send children to their favorite school. The interior secretary is ordered to submit a plan to Trump on how families affected by students attending schools in the Bureau of Indian Education can use federal money to frequent the school of their choice. And the Department of Health and Social Services must issue advice on how states can use HHS funds to attend private or denominational schools.
Various red states across the country have already adopted almost universal or universal universal choice policies at the level of the state – either good people who send public dollars directly to private schools or educational savings programs that offer more parents of flexibility on the place to spend money. The Trump administration’s decision to allow federal taxes to be directed to the school’s choice could overcome the movement.
But defenders of public schools and unions of public school teachers have long been against the redirection of dollars from taxpayers from public schools to private schools, saying that this would harm the poorer public schools. The districts have already dealt with budgetary deficits, in addition to a spectacular reduction in the public school population, which is often a factor in determining the financing of a school district. The defenders of public schools believe that the choice of school finally means the end of public schools and an increase in inequalities in education.
As CNN has reported, some of Trump’s education proposals – such as the elimination of the Ministry of Education and the reduction of federal funding for public schools – could strike areas that have voted for him. A CNN analysis revealed that the 15 states that were most based on federal support for their public schools in 2022 voted for Trump, while all the 15 states which received the least federal dollars in percentage of their overall income Vice-president Kamala Harris.
But a source with a teacher union expressed a certain skepticism on the overall impact of this order, stressing how the choice of unpopular school has been with certain voters who rejected these policies at the level of the state.
The additional decree linked to the school is to protect the rights of parents and end discrimination.
“My administration will apply the law to guarantee that beneficiaries of federal funds providing education from kindergarten to 12th year comply with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination in various contexts and protecting parents’ rights,” said the order.
He calls on government agencies to develop a plan aimed at putting an end to funding “for illegal and discriminatory treatment and indoctrination in schools from kindergarten to 12th year, including on the basis of sex and sex and discriminatory equity ideology ”.
Trump also calls on the federal government to cancel student visas for what he called “Hamas sympathizers” on university campuses, according to an information sheet from the White House.
He subsequently signed a decree which calls on government agencies to submit a report within 60 days to identify the civil and criminal authorities to fight against anti -Semitism and to “contain an inventory and an analysis of all the administrative complaints in progress , on the date of the report, against or involving higher education establishments alleging violations of civil rights linked or resulting from October 7, 2023, anti -Semitism of the campus. »»
On the campaign path, Trump mired against the demonstrations of pro-Palestinian students, who broke out in response to the military response of Israel in Gaza after the attack on October 7, 2023 of Hamas against Israel.
The platform of the 2024 National Republican National Convention is committed to “expelling pro-Hamas radicals and making our university campuses safe and patriotic again”, arousing uncertainty about the future among international students.
