US President Donald Trump has published an executive decree calling for all federal funds to the public broadcasting (PBS) and National Radio (NPR) service.
Trump allegedly alleged that the two organizations engaged in a “partisan and partisan information cover” on Thursday evening.
The ordinance institutes the board of directors of the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which distributes funding at PBS and NPR stations, to “cease direct funding” to “maximum measure authorized by law”.
He adds that the Board of Directors should “refuse to provide future funding” to press organizations. The BBC contacted NPR and PBS for comments.
“What points of view NPR and PBS promote are not important,” said the order.
“What matters is that none of the entities presents a fair, exact or impartial representation of current events to contradictory citizens.”
The White House said that the financing of the information media is “not only exceeded and useless but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence” and that the media landscape has become more “diverse”.
However, the CPB budget has already been approved by the congress until 2027.
“ Devastating impact ”
According to their estimates, more than 40 million Americans listen to the NPR public radio and 36 million local television views of the PBS network.
NPR director Katherine Maher said in March that the radio station would receive around $ 120 million (90 million pounds Sterling) from the CPB in 2025, “less than 5% of her budget”.
The two organizations previously declared that Trump’s efforts to reduce funding could have a “devastating impact” on those that count on them for new credible, including during emergency situations.
On Friday, the group of media rights warned against “an alarming deterioration in press freedom” in the United States under Trump and “unprecedented” difficulties for independent journalists around the world.
