US President Donald Trump said his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping told him that China would not go Taiwan while Trump was in office.
On Friday, Trump made these comments in an interview with Fox News, before the interviews with Russian president, Vladimir Putin, against the invasion of Ukraine by Moscow.
“I’m going to tell you, you know, you have a very similar thing with President XI of China and Taiwan, but I do not think there is a way that it happens as long as I am here. We will see,” Trump said in an interview on the special Fox News report.
“He said to me:” I will never do it as long as you are president “. President XI told me that and I said:” Well, I appreciate it “, but he also said:” But I am very patient and China is very patient “,” said Trump.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
Trump and Xi held their first confirmed call from Trump’s second presidential term in June. Trump also said in April that Xi had called her but did not specify when this call had taken place.
China considers Taiwan as its own territory and has promised to “meet” with the democratic island and ruled separately, by force if necessary. Taiwan strongly opposes the allegations of sovereignty of China.
Although Washington is the main provider of weapons and Taiwan funders, the United States – like most countries – have no formal diplomatic link with the island.
