President Trump said on Friday that “many people are hungry” in the Gaza Strip under an Israeli blockade preventing aid deliveries, adding that the United States wanted to help mitigate suffering.
“We are going to manage a few situations that you have here,” Trump said, speaking to the United Arab Emirates during the last stage of his visit to three Nations of the Persian Gulf this week. “We look at Gaza, and we were able to take care of this. Many people are hungry. Many people. There is a lot of bad things happening. ”
Aid groups have warned for weeks that the Gaza population is on the brink of famine, and some Israeli military officials began to express private concerns about the risk of famine in the territory, 19 months after the war.
In addition to the total seat he has imposed on Gaza for more than two months, Israel has increased his military campaign in recent days. Friday, the strikes killed more than 100 people, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, one day after the Israeli bombing forced the closure of one of the main hospitals in the enclave.
The Trump administration had long been largely silent on the conduct of Israel on the war in Gaza. The Arab Gulf leaders who met Trump during his trip to the region this week took the opportunity to fight this position after marking a remarkable reversal on Syria, when the president announced the first day of the visit he would raise sanctions with regard to the country.
Trump emerged from his trip to the Middle East with a more sympathetic tone on Gaza – a notable change given his long -standing relations with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.
