President Trump plans to assess damage from last year’s hurricanes in North Carolina and this month’s fires in California on Friday, after saying disaster response should be shifted from the federal government to the states .
In an interview on Fox News on Wednesday, the president criticized the performance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “FEMA is going to be the subject of a big debate very soon,” he said. “I prefer to see states take care of their own problems.”
Mr. Trump continued: “FEMA stands in the way of everything. ” Referring to Oklahoma, he said, “If they get hit by a tornado or something, let Oklahoma take care of it. You don’t need it – and then the federal government can help them with money.
Project 2025, the Republican administration blueprint developed by the Heritage Foundation, calls for reversing the financial burden of responding to small disasters so that 75 percent is borne by the states and the remainder by the federal government. Russell Vought, the chief architect of Project 2025, is Mr. Trump’s choice to lead the Office of Management and Budget, where he would significantly shape the federal budget.
Mr. Trump’s comments on Fox News left many unanswered, particularly about how much of the cost of disasters he wants to pass on to states.
