Trump says Arizona abortion ban goes too far and ‘will be fixed’

Donald Trump said Wednesday that Arizona’s abortion ban, upheld this week by the state Supreme Court, “goes too far.”

He reiterated that his position of giving states the right to create their own laws regarding termination of pregnancy was the best policy and asserted that Arizona would “rectify” the 1864 law that bans all abortions except when the mother’s life is in danger.

Speaking on the tarmac in Atlanta, Georgia, as he arrived for a fundraiser, the former president answered a wide range of questions from reporters – including about the war between Israel and Hamas.

Trump, 77, then went to a Chick-fil-a where he spoke with workers and ordered 30 milkshakes and chicken, paying for everyone in the restaurant.

After disembarking, Trump said President Joe Biden had “completely lost control of the situation in Israel” and abandoned the U.S. ally in its conflict with terrorists operating from Gaza.

Although he repeatedly praised his appointment to the Supreme Court, which led to the overturning of the landmark abortion decision Roe v. Wade, Trump appears to be backtracking on some of his most pro-life positions.

Trump stopped to speak with reporters on the Georgia tarmac and said Arizona had gone “too far” with its decision to uphold a 160-year-old law that bans almost all abortions except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger.

On Monday, he said abortion laws should be left to the states, which was criticized by some radical pro-lifers like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). And now he says Arizona and Florida will likely have to adjust their laws to be more in line with what people want.

After landing in Georgia on Wednesday, Trump said President Joe Biden had “completely lost control of the situation in Israel” and abandoned the U.S. ally in its conflict with terrorists operating out of Gaza.

Meanwhile, he also discussed the Arizona Supreme Court decision that is rattling abortion activists, and even pro-life Republicans.

The decision overturned a new law banning abortion for 15 weeks, enacted after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision in June 2022 overturned the long-standing landmark Roe v. Wade, which provided federal protections for abortion.

Arizona now has 14 days before returning to a 160-year-old law that bans all abortions without exception in cases of rape or incest.

“Has Arizona gone too far?” a reporter asked the former president, to which he replied: “Yes, they did and it will be fixed.” »

“And as you know, it’s all about states’ rights – that will be worked out,” he promised.

Trump added: “And I’m sure the governor and everyone will bring the matter back to reason and it will be taken care of pretty very quickly.”

But he also said Florida, where the former president now resides with his wife Melania and their son Barron, will need to reexamine its abortion laws.

“Florida is probably going to change, too,” Trump said. “Everything depends on the will of the people. That’s what I’m saying: it’s a perfect system.

Pro-abortion activists are gathering Tuesday in Tucson, Arizona, to protest the state Supreme Court’s upholding of an 1864 law that enacts some of the nation’s strictest abortion laws.

“So for 52 years, people have wanted to end Roe v. Wade to bring him back to the United States. We did it. It was an incredible thing, an incredible achievement,” he said. “And now the states have it. And the states publish what they want. It’s the will of the people.

“So Florida is probably going to change, Arizona is definitely going to change – everyone wants it to happen. And you get the will of the people, it’s quite astonishing,” he concluded.

Monday’s much-anticipated announcement of Trump’s abortion policy agenda was largely a dodge on the controversial issue.

The former president said he believed it was up to the states to decide, which is exactly what overturning Roe v. Wade led the way two years before Arizona’s decision.

“It’s a great franchise,” Trump told reporters after ordering a few dozen milkshakes. “The owner is a wonderful man who is a member of one of my clubs and he is fantastic. And they’re doing really well and, yes, they’re closed on Sundays.

“It’s the Lord’s chicken,” he joked.

Speaking to the young workers behind the counter, Trump said: “So, can I have 30 milkshakes? And also chicken – and we will take care of the customers.

“Is business good?” ” Earn lots of money ? ” he nodded then joked, “Everyone gets rich, right?
