Trump releases video referencing ‘unified Reich’ if re-elected

CNN

Former President Donald Trump released a video Monday showing footage of a fake newspaper article referring to a “unified Reich” if he is re-elected in 2024.

The video details “what happens after Donald Trump wins” with a narrator reading hypothetical headlines like “The Economy is Booming!” and “The Border is Closed,” styled like newspaper clippings from the First World War. Under a headline that says “What’s Next for America?” “” is a reference to the “creation of a unified Reich”.

Another title of the video reads “15 million illegal aliens deported” as the start and end of World War I approaches.

The term “Reich” is often associated with the Nazi Germany of Adolf Hitler, who referred to Germany as the “Third Reich” from 1933 to 1945.

The video was removed from Trump’s Truth Social account Tuesday morning.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said in a statement that the video was not created by the campaign and was “reposted by a staffer who clearly did not see the word, while the president was in court.”

Biden’s allies, meanwhile, quickly and roundly condemned Trump over the video, with his campaign and the White House denouncing what they called blatant anti-Semitism.

“It is abhorrent, sickening and shameful for anyone to promote content associated with the German Nazi government of Adolf Hitler,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement.

Trump “doesn’t play games; he’s telling America exactly what he intends to do if he returns to power: rule as a dictator over a “unified Reich,” said Biden campaign spokesman James Singer.

Trump has previously used anti-Semitic tropes, drawing widespread condemnation for lashing out at American Jews who he says do not sufficiently support him and Israel. His rhetoric – including claiming that undocumented migrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and calling his political opponents “vermin” – has drawn comparisons to the language used by Hitler.

At a rally in December, Trump dismissed criticism that his rhetoric echoed Hitler, telling the crowd in Iowa that he had never read “Mein Kampf.”
