Trump reduces $ 400 million in Columbia University funding

  • The Trump administration said on Friday that it had reduced $ 400 million in funding at Columbia University.
  • The administration said in its declaration that more cuts are expected.
  • Columbia faced the counterpouss on pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the face of the War of Israel in Gaza.

President Donald Trump follows his promise to punish universities on what he believes to be their failure to fight against anti -Semitism on the campus. And Columbia University is taking a big blow.

Friday, the Trump administration announced in a statement that it cancels around $ 400 million in federal contracts and subsidies in Columbia. The figure represents approximately 8% of the $ 5 billion in federal subsidy commitments that the university currently holds.

The Declaration – which came from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Ministry of Education and the US General Services Administration as members of the joint working group to combat anti -Semitism – said that the reduction in financing represents the “first cycle of action” and “additional cancellations that should follow”.

The offices cited ongoing demonstrations on the campus against the War of Israel in Gaza and “the continuous inaction of the school in the face of the persistent harassment of Jewish students”. With other major universities such as Harvard, Mit and Upenn, Columbia faced the counterpours on pro-Palestinian student demonstrations that have occurred on campus since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7.

“Universities must comply with all the federal laws of anti -discrimination if they want to receive federal funding,” said education secretary Linda McMahon. “For too long, Columbia abandoned this obligation to Jewish students who study on his campus. Today, we are demonstrating in Columbia and other universities that we will no longer tolerate their appalling inaction.”

The Trump administration has not provided additional details on contracts or subsidies that are affected by the reduction in financing.

“We are examining the announcement of federal agencies and we are committed to working with the federal government to restore federal funding from Columbia,” a spokesman for Columbia University said in a statement to Business Insider. “We take seriously the legal obligations of Columbia and understand how serious this announcement is and we are committed to fighting anti-Semitism and ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, our teachers and our staff.”

Harrison Fields, the main assistant press director of the White House, said in a statement to BI, “relentless anti -Semitic racism on university campuses will not be tolerated, and the University of Columbia has been held responsible for their refusal to protect students as well”.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened in a social position to cancel the funding of any university which allows what he called “illegal demonstrations” on their campuses.

“The agitators will be imprisoned / or continuously returned to the country from which they came. American students will be expelled permanently or, according to crime, arrested. No masks!” He wrote.
