Trump prices trigger 900 stellantis layoffs in Michigan, Indiana Plants

In the United States, 900 workers from Stellantis face temporary layoffs due to prices imposed by President Donald Trump. According to the Associated Press, layoffs are necessary after Stellantis closed production in facilities in Canada and Mexico in response to prices.

An assembly plant in Windsor, Canada will be closed during the weeks of April 7 and 14, before resuming operations on April 21. The Toluca assembly plant in Mexico will be closed for the rest of the month, from April 7.

Due to the international production of breaks, workers from Warren and Sterling Heights, Michigan stamping factories will be temporarily dismissed. The workers of a pair of plants in Kokomo, Indiana, are also faced with layoffs.

“We understand that the current environment creates uncertainty,” said North American Director of Stellantis, Antonio Filosa, in an e-mail to employees. “Rest assured that we are very committed to all our main stakeholders, including the main government leaders, unions, suppliers and dealers in the United States, Canada and Mexico, while we are working to manage and adapt to these changes.”

The number of Michigan workers affected by layoffs is not clear. Stellantis says he was monitoring the situation to determine if other measures should be taken.

The layoffs occur after a 25% rate has entered into force Thursday on all automotive imports. In response to American prices, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a 25% rate on all American vehicles imported into Canada.
