Trump prices already reduce imports of cars and factories to the slowdown

The 25% prices of President Trump on imported vehicles, which entered into force last week, are already sending tremors to the automotive industry, which prompted companies to stop shipping cars to the United States, to close factories in Canada and Mexico and to dismiss Michigan workers and other states.

Jaguar Land Rover, based in Britain, said that she would temporarily stop exporting her luxury cars to the United States. The factories in idle stellantis in Canada and Mexico, which make Chrysler and Jeep vehicles and have dismissed 900 American workers who provide these factories with engines and other rooms.

Audi, the Luxury Division of Volkswagen, has also taken a car export break to the United States of Europe, telling the dealers to sell everything they had on their prizes.

If other car manufacturers make similar movements, the economic impact could be serious, which causes higher car prices and generalized layoffs. The prices on cars are among the first of several statements specific to the industry that Trump has in sight and could offer early clues to the way companies will react to its commercial policies, especially if they increased prices or increase manufacturing in the United States. The president said that he also wanted to tax imports of drugs and computer chips.

The application of the new price to imported cars could increase their cost to consumers of thousands of dollars, which greatly reduces demand for these vehicles. For some Jaguar Land Rover or Audi models, prices could represent more than $ 20,000 per car.

Although a large part of the initial impact of prices was disruptive, in at least one case, the functions of Mr. Trump had the increased effect of increasing production in the United States. General Motors said at the end of last week that it would increase the production of light trucks in a Fort Wayne factory, ind.
