Your support helps us tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story develops. From investigating the finances of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC to producing our latest documentary, “The A Word,” which spotlights American women fighting for their reproductive rights, we know how important it is to analyze the facts from messaging.
At such a critical moment in U.S. history, we need journalists on the ground. Your donation allows us to continue sending journalists to speak on both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the political spectrum. And unlike many other quality media outlets, we choose not to exclude Americans from our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe that quality journalism should be accessible to all, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Defense Department is preparing to send about 1,500 active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border as an immigration crackdown begins.
The armed forces will join the 2,500 members of the National Guard and reserve forces already stationed at the border. Currently, no active duty troops are working on the border.
The forces are expected to support Border Patrol agents with logistics, transportation and barrier construction.
They have done similar things in the past when Trump, during his first term, and former President Joe Biden sent active duty troops to the border with Mexico.
This comes as the president orders that all government personnel working on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives be immediately placed on administrative leave.
The White House said all DEI staff would be furloughed at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
Trump called for an end to the “dangerous, humiliating and immoral” initiatives in an executive order issued Tuesday.
The president repeatedly attacked DEI programs during the election campaign, saying they were discriminatory.
DEI programs aim to encourage participation in workplaces by people from all backgrounds.
The Laken Riley Act passed the House by a vote of 263-156, with 46 Democrats voting in favor.
