President Donald Trump’s latest decree followed a major pardon program for student housing in the last attack on the administration against workers to government and non -profit organizations.
On Friday, Trump signed a decree aimed at limiting eligibility for the public service loans program, which forgives students’ debt to workers such as teachers, health workers and police after 10 years of eligible payments.
The incendiary rhetoric of the order said that organizations engaging in “activities that advance illegal immigration, terrorism, child abuse, discrimination and public disruptions” would be prohibited in the loan delivery program.
“The PSLF program also creates perverse incentives that can increase the cost of tuition fees, can load students in low majors with unbearable debt and can push students in organizations that hide under the umbrella of a non -profit designation and degrade our national interest,” said the order.
We do not know which organizations the Trump administration intends to accuse these “anti-American” activities. This occurs while the administration achieves mass dismissals of federal workers. The order has ordered Linda McMahon, the new Trump’s education secretary, to redefine what the “public service” is to align themselves with the political opinions of the administration. The defenders of the borrower of Loan Student say that they will bring the administration to court if they follow this order.
According to the latest data from the Department of Education, more than 2 million borrowers were registered with the PSLF with eligible employers in December 2024.
This is not the first time that Trump has targeted the PSLF. During his first mandate, his Ministry of Education increased a backlog of PSLF requests. He has also already suggested that he completely eliminate the program. This would require an act of congress, and there is not yet sufficient support to eliminate the program.
To resolve the backwards of PSLF requests and paperwork problems with the program, the education department of former President Joe Biden introduced a limited time derogation to allow the previous payments of borrowers – including those who were previously deemed ineligible for the PSLF – to count on their progress in forgiveness.
Biden also carried out a targeted relief for borrowers of the PSLF in the context of punctual account adjustments in order to update payments. In the past few weeks in office, he announced a cancellation of $ 465 million for 6,100 borrowers registered with the PSLF.
In the midst of Trump’s efforts to limit the program, McMahon said during her confirmation audience that she would honor the program as the Congress.
She added: “If we want stronger or more programs for the forgiveness of loans, I think the congress should adopt these programs, then we would implement it.”
Some defense groups have criticized the decree. Aaron, president of the defense of the students of the Borrower protection group, said in a statement that the PSLF had been created by a “bipartite of the congress” and “the Americans worked hard and made decisions for life by assuming that the United States holds out”.
“The threat of punishing the Americans workers for the perceived political opinions of their employers is such a blatant violation of the first amendment as you can imagine,” said. “If the Trump administration follows this threat, he can plan to see us in court.”
