CNN political analyst Maggie Haberman said Tuesday on “Anderson Cooper 360” that President-elect Donald Trump was “clearly in an expansionist mindset” as he discussed the desire to acquire Greenland from Denmark or to seize the Panama Canal during his press conference.
Haberman said: “You know, especially in Greenland, these things are not all the same. Panama is one of its relatively new priorities. As Kaitlin said, in Greenland, not only has he been talking about it for a while, but a lot of people have been talking about it for a while. This idea of acquiring Greenland for strategic purposes has been around, you know, for decades. A close friend of Trump suggested it to him during his first term, Ron Lauder. This trend has never completely disappeared, but Trump is clearly in an expansionist mindset.”
She added: “He also continues to talk about Canada as a 51st state which is clearly much more of a troll and some sort of domination game. But the fact that Trump is talking about military action, or at least not ruling it out, as Kaitlin said, surprised many people. We’re not sure if this is something he’s thinking about or something he said because he was visibly in a bad mood during that press conference. I think primarily because of the legal challenges he faces this week in the criminal case in New York and the possibility that the Jack Smith report and documents from the federal case will be made public. So it remains to be seen what that will look like when he takes office, but it’s no surprise that Trump, at least in his language, has never been particularly respectful of sovereign borders. We’ll see what this looks like in practice.
