President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration is expected to take place indoors on Monday due to dangerously cold temperatures projected in the nation’s capital, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the plans told CNN.
Plans are underway for Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance to take the oath of office in the rotunda of the US Capitol, the sources said. Discussions regarding the location of the inaugural parade and other celebrations are still ongoing. However, Trump’s team is in talks to possibly hold some festivities at the Capital One arena, where Trump will hold a rally on Sunday.
Trump’s team is also in talks with the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies about how to handle the tens of thousands of people who had planned to travel to the National Mall to watch Trump’s swearing-in. Those decisions are still under review, the sources said. CNN.
Officials are concerned that the low temperatures could pose a health risk to participants and guests.
The last president to be sworn in indoors was Ronald Reagan in 1985, when daytime temperatures dropped to 7 degrees with a wind chill of -25. Reagan took the oath of office in the Capitol rotunda. Its inaugural parade was canceled.
