Trump extends Tiktok Deal’s deadline, delaying a potential ban

On Friday, President Trump granted Tiktok another stay by announcing that he would extend the deadline when the popular app should conclude an agreement to be separated from its Chinese owner, Bytedance, or to face a ban in the United States.

Tiktok, who had faced a deadline on Saturday for an agreement, now has an additional 75 days to find a new owner to comply with a federal law which requires changing its structure to resolve national security problems. This puts the new deadline for an agreement in mid-June.

The delay was the second president Trump for Tiktok this year. He first took an application of the law in January, even after he was unanimously supported by the Supreme Court.

“The agreement requires more work to ensure that all the necessary approvals are signed,” wrote Mr. Trump in an article on Truth Social on Friday, adding that “we do not want Tiktok“ to be unleashed ”. ” He added that he was looking forward to “working with Tiktok and China” to conclude the agreement and suggested that he was planning to use the application as a negotiation china on China on prices.

Mr. Trump’s latest action highlights the insoluble nature of the dilemma with Tiktok, who has undergone years of control in the United States on his Chinese ties. Even if legislators and US officials have repeatedly raised questions as to Tiktok was safe, the application cemented its role as cultural mastodon, with more than 170 million users in the country who use it to make memes and share videos.

The extension occurs at a particularly difficult time in American-Chinese relations. This week, Trump raised a 34% rate on goods from China. On Friday, Beijing retaliated with 34% prices through imports from the United States. Mr. Trump has repeatedly thought of that he would lower the prices on China in exchange for his approval of a tiktok agreement.
