The Trump administration reveals an extension of the Biden era for temporary protected status, or TPS, for the Venezuelans, a decision that removes work permit for hundreds of thousands of immigrants and makes them eligible for expulsion .

Kristi Noem, the new interior security secretary, announced the decision to end the 18 -month extension of the TP for the Venezuelans who implemented a few days before leaving the White House. “The inhabitants of this country want these bags to the ground,” she said on Fox and Friends. “They want their communities to be safe.”

Immigration and customs application (ICE) have provided very little data on immigrants arrested in recent days, in particular if they have a criminal record.

Many studies show that immigrants without legal status are less likely to commit crimes than non-immigrants.

TPS is a federal program that protects people from countries ravaged by war or the natural disasters of expulsion and grants them work permits. It was created in the 1990s, to offer assistance to the Salvadoran fleeing the civil war of El Salvador. Currently, nearly a million people from 17 countries have a time of time. According to the Ministry of Internal Security, the Venezuelans have received TPs due to “the serious humanitarian emergency that the country continues to deal with political and economic crises under the inhuman regime of Maduro”.

The Republicans have long argued that the TPS program has moved away from its original mission.

Secretary Noem added that, in the future, the status of all migrants with TPS in the United States will be reconsidered.

The decision was criticized by defenders and Democratic leaders. Earlier Wednesday, the member of the Joaquin Castro Congress (D-Texas) told NPR: “As a nation which considers us as a lighthouse of light and hope and refuge for people who were fleeing from dangerous leaders, C ‘is really a betrayal of our values. “
