Friday, the Goverland government announced an agreement for a coalition between the Democrats of Greenland and other parties.
Trump’s obsession for strategic island rich in minerals has been strengthened in recent weeks. He made the question a primary national security priority and told journalists on Friday that “we must have” the territory to guarantee the position of the United States in the Arctic.
The comments of the American president come after a week of diplomatic tensions between the United States and Denmark, and on the heels of the visit of the American vice-president JD Vance in Greenland.
Speaking from the United States Pituffik space base on the northeast coast of Greenland on Friday, Vance said that military intervention would not be necessary if the Greenlanders decide to break with Copenhagen and “conclude an agreement” with Washington.
Vance also criticized Denmark, saying that it had not done a good job for the inhabitants of Greenland. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lars Løkke Rasmussen responded by publishing a video describing the trip of the American vice-president as disrespectful and by criticizing his “tone”.
Danish Prime Minister puts Frederiksen said that she would visit the island in the coming days to strengthen cooperation between Greenland and Denmark. Unlike Vance, she will meet government representatives and local residents.
